UPSC Syllabus - IAS Prelims Syllabus

The UPSC invites the eligible candidates to apply for the IAS Examinations every year and more than 10 lakhs aspirants fill the form of IAS prelims examination out of which only few got the success in prelims as well as in mains examination.

The Civil Services Prelims Examination Syllabus: The Prelims Examination will be an Objective type of Examination which consists of Multiple Choice Questions. The Students who are qualified and selected in Prelims Examination will be allowed to Mains. Before preparing for this exam one should know the complete syllabus.

The Preliminary Examination is composed of two components:
  1. General Studies - 200 marks (100 Questions)
  2. Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) - 200 Marks (80 Questions)


Officially the following syllabus is given by UPSC;

1.   Current Affairs: Events occurring in the National as well as in the World related to International Relation, Economic Updates, Geo Political Issues, Environmental Summits and Issues.
2.   Indian History (Ancient, Medieval) & National Movement of India, Questions also come from 1700-1857 events.

3.   Geography: India & the World; Physical, Economic & Social Geography of India as well the World.

4. Polity of India & Indian Governance: Constitution, Panchayati Raj, Executive, Public Policy, Political System, Rights Issue, etc. In recent trends political science is covering 15-20 questions from static part by linking it with current affairs.

5.   Economics covers maximum number of questions every in prelims. If you have done economics very well you have high chances of clearing prelims examination. It includes Economic Development & Social Development: Sustainable Development, Social Sector Initiatives, Banking and Finance, Demography of the Nation, Poverty, Infrastructure, Agriculture.

6.   General Issues on Bio-Diversity, Environmental Ecology and Change in the Climate (these do not require any specialisation).

7.   General Science: Focus on biology and basic concept of science from NCERT books. (Don't do PHD in basic science just know the concepts to save your time)

8.   Science and Tech (Most of the questions are coming from current inventions and latest technologies).  

Make your own notes and do not skip NCERT at least history and Macro and Microeconomics of 10+2 is recommended, as in prelims questions are directly coming from these books. Hope you have got to know your UPSC syllabus 2020 for prelims, It will help you to build your strategy further.
